Elderly motorist mounts pavement and drives her hatchback into three-year-old child and woman

A woman and child have been hit by a car after it mounted a pavement in Edinburgh this afternoon.  

Emergency services rushed to the scene with eight police cars and two fire engines in attendance, as well as ambulance crews.

The crash happened in Morningside, Edinburgh, around 2.30pm with the child, thought to be around three years old, losing their wellies in the collision. 

Witnesses say the car was driven by an elderly woman and ploughed into the side of a building after mounting the pavement and hitting the child and woman.

The conditions of the three people involved are unclear, though witnesses suggest their injuries are not thought to be serious.

One witness, speaking on condition of anonymity, said: ‘There were two injured parties, one was a child who looked to be around three years old.

‘I just have his or her little wellies stuck in my head which had fallen off.

‘The child appeared to be partially under the car and appeared to be breathing when I was there.

‘The other party was a female who appeared to be the child’s mother.

‘She had cuts to her arm and face and was bleeding. The driver was an elderly woman.

‘There were around ten police cars, two ambulance vehicles and a fire engine.

One witness, speaking on condition of anonymity, said: ‘There were two injured parties, one was a child who looked to be around three years old’

‘A nurse and a pharmacist from a local pharmacy got to the accident before the ambulance arrived

‘I arrived just after the car hit the building.’

The red car could be seen taped off inside a police cordon.

A spokesman for Police Scotland said: ‘Around 2.30pm on Tuesday, June 30, police received a report of a road traffic crash involving a car and two pedestrians in Morningside Road, Edinburgh.

‘Emergency services remain at the scene.’
